Unit Learning Outcomes

In this assessment, you will be tested on whether you have successfully met the following Unit Learning Outcomes (ULOs):

  • ULO2: Effectively write and present project planning and controlling reports.
  • ULO3: Analyse a project case and develop a constraint management plan.
  • ULO4: Productively work in diverse teams to deliver agreed outcomes.

Submission Type and Required Format

The type of assessment you will be completing is a Report

It should include the following:

  • The introduction should provide an overview of the topic and the key points that will be covered in the report. The general rule is that the introduction accounts for 10% of the total report word count.
  • The main body contains sections (and sub-sections) providing supporting details related to the topic.
  • The conclusion includes a summary of the main points and findings covered in the paper. Like the introduction, the conclusion generally accounts for 10% of the total report word count.
  • The reference list and in-text citations follow APIC Harvard referencing style.
  • If required add an appendix with information that does not need to go in the body of the report but would be useful for the reader.

Assessment Details

Assessment Purpose

The purpose of this assessment is to assess students' technical skills in planning and communicating a project plan effectively. Students are required to form a group (max. 4 students), select a project case (either from the provided links to the real-life projects or a project case of their group's choice).

The selected project (either ongoing or already completed) is to be assumed by your group to be in final stage of Initiation, with either a signed off Project charter or in the stage of getting the approval of the Project charter.

Students' are required to create the scope management plan, schedule management plan and cost management plan for their project.

This report should include an introduction to the project case, a stakeholders' register, and a brief project charter.

Assessment Instructions

In this assessment, you will need to complete the following steps:

  1. Select projects in your field of interest. Following resources may assist students in selecting a real-life project:

  2. Develop a scope management plan for the selected project.

    The Scope management needs to include:

    • Project justification, in-scope and out-of-scope, constraints, Limits, assumptions, technical requirements and statement of work (SOW)
    • WBS structure (minimum of three levels), WBS dictionary, work packages, scope verification and validation methods, scope change control, and designing the change control boards (CCB) and roles and responsibilities
  3. Develop a schedule management plan for the selected project.
    • Include processes, tools and techniques to be used and documents to be developed as per your client's requirements
    • Define activities (activity list, proper activity logic, activities identification), milestones list, activities sequence, relationships, project network diagram and critical path(s)
    • Include EVA analysis for monitoring and controlling schedule
  4. Develop a cost management plan for the selected project.
    • Plan cost management (identify processes, tools and techniques to be used and project documents to be developed)
    • Define cost elements (labour, material, variable cost)
    • Identify types of cost (direct, indirect, fixed, variable)
    • Determine the estimating method(s) and use estimating techniques
    • Establish time-phased budget
    • Provide a discussion on monitoring and controlling cost
  5. Prepare your report.

    For successful completion of this assessment, students should meet with their group regularly (at least once a week) and discuss their work with lecturer and to seek support.

    It is advised to follow the order given below to arrange the contents of the assignment in your report:

    1. Introduction
    2. Scope management plan
    3. Schedule management plan
    4. Cost management plan
    5. Conclusion

In this assessment, the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools is NOT PERMITTED. In this assessment, you must NOT use generative artificial intelligence (AI) to generate any materials or content in relation to the assessment task.

This means you are NOT allowed to use any AI tools such as chatbots, text generators, paraphrasers, summariser, or solvers to complete your assessment. You are expected to produce your own work and cite any sources properly.
